Gold Mexican Libertad coins are legal tender gold bullion coins produced by the Mexican Mint. Although all of the Mexican Libertad coins in gold and silver are considered legal tender backed by Banco de Mexico, none of the coins are issued an official face value. Like the Gold Krugerrands of South Africa, Gold Libertads are an official legal tender coin with no expressed value.
Banco de Mexico has stated that the coins have a floating face value tied to the spot price of gold or silver. To use the coins for a commercial transaction one would have to contact the bank to figure out the value at that time of the coin based on its weight and metal content.
On the obverse of 2019 1 oz Gold Mexican Libertad coins is a design known as Winged Victory. This figure was a symbol of Mexico’s resistance to Spanish colonial rule in the 19th century, and the depiction featured on these coins accurately captures her appearance on the Mexican Independence Victory Column found in Mexico City.
Winged Victory’s first appearance on gold coins from Mexico came with the release of the 1921 gold Centenario. Issued to mark the 100th anniversary of independence, those coins had a classic design of Winged Victory. In that same year, she appeared as a 17-foot tall statue constructed at the top of the Victory Column.
The reverse of 1 oz Gold Mexican Libertad coins marks the only issuance of a gold bullion coin in this collection with a different design. While the modern coat of arms appears on all gold bullion versions of the Gold Libertad, only the 1 oz coin has the 10 historic designs surrounding this central design element.
